Shakira who was born in Columbia to a Lebanese father, on Friday called for “an immediate cease-fire” and “a diplomatic solution” for the conflict between Lebanon and Israel.

According to a communiqué from her record company in Los Angeles, the pop singer said “I want to speak in the name of my generation, because I am sure that it agrees with this: war does not solve anything. The war is a solution to no conflict.”

Shakira, who’s now 29, urged the US and the international community to intervene for a peaceful solution.

The artist, who had topped the charts with mega hits like “La tortura”, “whenever, wherever” is now doing so for “Hips don’t lie”.

She is now calling on the American officials and other superpowers to stop the war in the region.

Shakira’s collaboration with Wyclef Jean still continues to top the European singles chart for the seventh week in a row, while Muse are still number one in the continent’s albums chart. Jean’s and shakira hips don lie ’ again holds Gnarls Barklay’s Crazy in second place, while Nelly Furtado climbs a place with Maneater.

At number four is Crazy Frog’s We Are The Champions, with Lily Allen’s Smile at number five.

At the European albums chart, Muse have notched up a second week at number one with Black Holes and Revelations.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke’s debut solo album, The Eraser, is a new entry at number two, and Shakira’s Oral Fixation VOL 2 remains at number three. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Stadium Arcadium drops two places to number four, and Nelly Furtado’s Loose is at number five.

Shakira made a plea for a cease fire in Lebanon Thursday, before performing at a concert in Athens. “So many mothers and children are dying every day and that’s something we cannot tolerate, not today, not in the 21st century,” said the Colombian singer , her father is also from Lebanon.

She also said that “I want to call (on) the US leaders to stop this war, because we all know that they can stop it,”
“I just hope that there is a diplomatic and international intervention right away, I think it’s necessary.”

Shakira is right now on her Oral Fixation world tour. Her remarks were well received in Greece, which has evacuated 1,700 people from Lebanon 500 Greece and 1,200 non-Greeks and where near daily demonstrations have been held against the Israeli attacks Late Thursday, about 500 people marched to the Israeli embassy to protest the bombings.

Colombian pop star Shakira was honoured for her humanitarian work by the United Nations (UN) in New York City recently.

This Hips Don’t Lie star singer, joined a fellow honoree, Czech supermodel Karolina Kurkova to receive this accolade at the UN headquarters in Manhattan.

Shakira was given an award for her tireless campaigning in her native Colombia, where she started a charitable foundation Barefoot to assist youngsters escape violence.

She said, “Let’s not forget at the end of this day when we all go home, 960 children will have died in Latin America. “As part of a generation that has so many ideas and technologies and things that my parents’ generation didn’t have access to. Let’s take advantage of this historical opportunity we have within reach to make this world a better place.”
